Security study: EU citizens restrict internet use for fear of hackers Almost a quarter of EU citizens are reluctant to provide personal information to network services. According to the study, a good third had to struggle with security problems caused by using the Internet for private purposes. The greatest difficulty is fraudulent messages trying to get information such as username and password to log in to email accounts or websites for e-banking (phishing, 26 percent) , Around 13 percent of users were redirected to fake websites on which personal information was requested (pharming). Around three percent were harmed by the fraudulent use of credit or debit cards, and three percent by loss of documents, images or other data due to a virus or other computer damage (such as a worm or Trojan). Around two percent of those surveyed found that their social networking account or email account had been hacked and that content was being published or posted without their knowledge.
